Source : Yahoo AnswersQuestion : Do you allow your children to watch TV to go to sleep at night?

My daughter is 6, and she still insists that she needs me to sit with her to go to sleep. She’s had bad things happen to her, but her crisis councilor insists that I don’t treat her like she’s fragile. I still need to be firm, but loving. I know she’s scared at night, but she won’t have me her whole life. She must learn to get herself through the night. I attempted to “sleep train” her when she was still an infant, but whenever she fussed, her dad went in and ruined any progress I made. Now, I’m still struggling to get her to go to bed. She always says she’s scared, which I get. I have tried nightlights, but she doesn’t like them because then her glow in the dark stars don’t work. It’s either glow in the dark stars on the ceiling or the night light. I’ve tried soft music, but she says she’s still scared. I, personally, sleep with the TV on. I started her on that and that’s the ONLY way I can get her to stay in her bed. Other than that, she either tries to get in my bed or she cries. She’s older now, so it’s not like she’ll cry for 15 minutes and fall asleep. If I try “cry it out” on my 6 year old, it lasts for HOURS and doesn’t stop with tears. She’s screaming, coming out of her room, she lets our dogs out of their kennels to sleep with her, etc. I’ve been consistent through all these years, but I’ve had people going behind me greasing palms, so to speak.
In the evening, she’s put to bed around 8:30. When she gets whiny and starts rolling around on the floor, I know that I waited too long to put her to bed, and I know it’s going to be a long night. I read stories, I rub her head for a while, hugs and kisses, and I tell her that I’m in the living room if she needs me. She then screams out that she’s scared. And that’s when it goes downhill. I do the reassuring, but she wants me IN her bed rubbing her back. That’s when I’ve implemented the TV. Is this the wrong thing to do?

Answer by Milwaukee Wis King
Rub her back and read a book/or listen to some soft music….you don’t want to allow her
To be depending upon TV, don’t rely on entertainment

Answer by jaz
I think you should let her sleep with the dogs in her room so she feels safe cause she will feel more safr cause dogs…. animals in general sense stuff beford use and it helps to have that one thing that keeps and makes you feel safe. My dad has my dog sleep with me. It’s a little weird not sleepi g with a dog at times but it helps cause i some times watch scary movies and it feels like my dog is keeping me safe while i sleep.

So, the crisis counselor said not to co-sleep with her? That would have been my first choice…

Under normal circumstances, I am totally against using the TV to get a child to go to sleep. In your case, I’d consider it, too, though. We have the “Baby TV” channel where they play soothing music along with calming pictures at night. Maybe they make DVDs as well? I wouldn’t let her watch shows but rather something like that.

Answer by Cocoa bean
My 4 year old falls asleep with a movie every night. We read and then I put a movie on in her room and usually about an hour later shes out, and I come in and turn it off, tuck her in, and turn her night light on, she rarely wakes up unless she has to go to the bathroom. I never saw a problem with it. I think she takes after me, I fall asleep watching tv too, just set a sleeper timer on my tv. Some people need silence we need noise :). If it works I don’t see any harm in it, I just wouldn’t leave it on all night.

Answer by AmberP
I remember one of your other questions about the same child being in 3 different schools in a year…are there any emotional support classes that she can be in and does she have an IEP. I just thought of that.

Now on to the tv thing.

I don’t agree with watching tv to go to sleep but if it is something that she has to do in order to get sleep then maybe that is part of her behavior problems? If that is the case, then keep the television on by all means. The child needs some sleep and if that gives it to her then it’s okay.

However, because of previous questions you have asked, I would tend to wonder if she really needs the tv or if she is using it as a form of trying to get what she wants out of you and you giving in to what she wants. I also wonder if there were no “greasing palms” going behind you if your previous way of trying to get her to bed would have worked.

There is a fine line between what is needed to keep a child calm, cool and collected because they have been traumatized and this is the “only way” she can sleep and that child using the fact that you know this, as a way of getting what they want. I would really talk to the counselor about this one. It seems this child may be a bit of a manipulator.

Ugh, You have a bad situation. You should have disciplined your husband. Discipline means teaching. If the two of you are not working together, you will end up with a spoiled brat, which I’m afraid has happened. Fixing the problem now will be a whole lot more work than nipping it in the bud would have been. You cannot allow your child to make the rules. By catering to a child’s every wish and demand and by believing her false logic, a parent is allowing the child to be in control. Don’t give her a choice. She is a child. She doesn’t know what she wants. She will say she is afraid if that is what gets her the attention she wants. That’s normal behavior for a child. Leaving a TV on is a band-aid that will not fix the problem and has a potential to make things worse.
If it is an engaging program, it could keep her awake. Lack of sleep can affect her memory as well as her mood the next day. Getting in the habit of sleeping late and staying up all night is bad for the school schedule.
Instead of using the TV to appease her need for attention, you should teach her to read a book or meditate.
When I was that age and I had a bad dream, my dad told me to visualize myself riding a horse drawn wagon slowly down a road and if there was anything scary, to just EX it out with a marker in my mind’s eye. I still use that to this day. Empower her to not be scared by telling her what SHE can do to stop being scared.

Nope. Bed is bed. Use a fan to create background noise that will do the trick. Some kids need it to sleep, mine do.

Answer by jane
No. They watch a show after dinner, then we brush our teeth, put on PJs, read our books, then I tuck them into their beds and they fall asleep.

I was raised in the same way. My husband, on the other hand, was always allowed to sleep with the TV on. Now he can sleep with lights/TV noise and I must have silence/darkness.

It wasn’t easy training them to get in to their beds, and stay in their beds. It was a battle but they caught on to the routine with time. With this set routine they know what to expect, and they also know from experience that the routine isn’t going to change- no matter how hard they try.

Just find something and keep it up. She will fall into the routine and everyone will be happy.

Source : Yahoo AnswersQuestion : Does anyone have intense feelings towards magic?

Today I started thinking about magic, how I just have very strong emotions towards magic. I’m sixteen, and I just love everything that has to do with magic, I’m learning how to palm read, and contact juggle, and all I want is to be magic, and my emotions just over power me soon after I talk about it. I started crying, but not about the magic, about my friends and how I love them or something in my life I love. I just want to know if anyone else have such a strong spiritual connection to the idea of magic.

Answer by katie7070
Neither contact juggling nor palm reading have anything to do with magic. Contact juggling is physics and palm reading is trickery.

Personally, I believe magic is not real, only serves to give people false hope, and allows con artists to scam poor saps such as yourself. Grow up and get a real life.

Answer by Kelsey
I do love magic, and if it exists, I want to learn. It’s a wonderful concept.

Hint: You might, instead, try to sell your “soul”

Answer by i am dog
like the sole of your shoe, or like the fish?
it makes a difference.

Answer by Jesus the Christ
1) Retake English Class

2) Become a Scintologist or a Mormon

Answer by Google is my best friend
Uhm, you might want to take it apart from your shoe.

Now selling your SOUL, that’s a different story.

Answer by Lance
Take off your shoe. With a sharp knife, separate the stitching of the sole from the base of the shoe. Then advertise it on Craigslist.

Answer by Get In Line
Well, you might want to start with the shoemaker if you want to sell your ‘sole’. If it’s your ‘soul’ you’re talking about…sorry, I can’t help you with that one.

Answer by Nameme
Get thee to a cobbler!

Answer by Drake
step one. Learn how to spell soul.

It won’t work. Why would anyone want it if you don’t even want?

Answer by The Comma,, Lady,,,,,
You cannot sell your soul ,,,,because it belongs to God and He will not allow it to be sold,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Not much market for used soles alone unless you’re someone famous. As suggested above, try eBay.

Answer by gunnlaugur
if you have satan in mind then im rorry he dosent buy souls he wants people to come to him on there own

lets just go to the robert jhonson legend robert sayd he sold his soul to the devil but in reality hoodoo was very popular at that time and robert sold his soul to papa legba a name well know in hoodoo

here is everything i know about him

Road openers spirit list

Some of them are

• Papa Legba
• Maximon
• Pomba Gira
• Hekate
• Ogun

Remember that any crossroad is a very dangerous place. It is there that the force of Legba is strongest.

Papa Legba is the Guardian of the Crossroads, a master linguist, trickster, warrior, and personal messenger of destiny. He has the power to remove obstacles and he provides opportunities. All ceremonies begin and end with Papa Legba, and there can be no communication with any of the other loas without consulting him first.

and some of his favorite things that can be used as offerings include, candy, cigars, rum, and tobacco. He absolutely loves palm oil. His number is three and his day of the week is Monday. He is often depicted as an old man with a crooked cane, dressed in brown pants, and accompanied by a rooster.

Papa Legba is famous for granting fame and fortune through petitioning him with the crossroads ritual.

“If you want to learn how to make songs yourself, you take your guitar and your go to where the road crosses that way, where a crossroads is. Get there be sure to get there just a little ‘ fore 12 that night so you know you’ll be there. You have your guitar and be playing a piece there by yourself. A big black man will walk up there and take your guitar and he’ll tune it. And then he’ll play a piece and hand it back to you. That’s the way I learned to play anything I want.”

Tommy Johnson

How to Summon Papa Legba
In Voodoo, Papa Legba is the most important spirit. Papa Legba gaurds the gate between our world and the world of the spirits. At every crossroads there is a gate, and at every gate, there is Papa Legba. He must be summoned in every Voodoo ritual before another member of the Lwa (spirits) is summone, because he chooses who passes between those gates.

On a sidenote: He appears as an old man with a crutch and a cane.

To summon Papa Legba, in the way I was taught, you must take pipe tobacco or cigar and throw it in the fire as an offering to him. He will take 3, 5 or 7 coins if you do not have tobacco products. I have seen someone use a box of cigarettes in a pinch. We often joke that Papa Legba died from lung cancer.

Then people dance in an African style while some people beats out a traditional rhythm. Then a mambo or haugon (a priest or priestess respectfully) chants something to the extent of:

Papa Legba, ouvirier barrier pour moi agoe
Papa Legba, ouvirier barrier pour moi
Attibon Legba, ouvirier barrier pour moi passer
Passer Vrai, loa moi passer m’a remerci loa moin

But, I have seen other variants of this. I use the chant my great-grandmother used, which translates to:

Papa Legba open the gates for me.
Papa Legba open the gates so I may pass through
Papa Legba open the gates and let me pass
Papa Legba open the gates so I may pass through

Papa Legba I give you this offering as a payment
So that you may open up this gate and let me pass
I must speak to the (add name of lwa family or single Iwa here)
Papa Legba open the gates so I may pass through

Sidenote: I’ve done this so much, that just reading the incantation to proofread, I could feel the gate start to open.

From there, someone or a few people will become possessed, and either fall down while speaking in tongues, have something that looks like a seizure, or start howling out jumbled words. I have seen a number of different results, it depends.

Cast your circle on a monday night, to bring Papa Legba to your site.
Chant the following and place the lit cigars in your circle, with the glasses of rum and the cane.
Papa Legba, open the gate for me Ago eh, Papa Legba, open the gate for me Open the gate for me, Papa for me to pass When I will thank the Lwa!
If he responds, show extreme gratitude and respect! Ask your question..and I stress QUESTION…NOT questions
Wait for his reply, thank him and close your circle.

btw if this works for you might want to send me a little check for my effort 😉

✰✪✰ In 2010, I predicted the exact date of the August 23, 2011 – Mineral, Virginia 5.8 magnitude earthquake that rocked the entire East Coast of the United States and up through Canada creating more than $300 million dollars in damage.
I had also seen a fantastic amount of water, coming in shortly thereafter. I therefore notified the appropriate government authorities to warn them.
17 Hours after the quake, Hurricane Irene made landfall less than 300 miles from the epicenter of the Earthquake.
Damage estimates from this hurricane, throughout the United States were near $19.6 billion dollars, which made it the 5th costliness hurricane in United States history
The coastlines were evacuated and lives were saved because of this prediction and appropriate warnings.
